Chapter 8 - The Arrest Beside the Grand Piano

The double mahogany front doors of Vance Manor swung open with a resounding, authoritative crash.
Senior Detective Marcus Stone of the County Major Crimes Division marched into the drawing room accompanied by four uniformed police officers and two armed Federal Marshals.
Detective Stone walked straight up to Vanessa Kensington, unholstering heavy steel handcuffs.
“Vanessa Kensington,” Detective Stone announced loudly. “Under State Warrants 402 through 405, you are under arrest for Aggravated Child Abuse with a Deadly Weapon, Assault Resulting in Great Bodily Harm to a Minor, and First-Degree Premeditated Murder.”
Two female officers pinned Vanessa’s arms behind her back, snapping the cold iron cuffs shut around her wrists.
“Adrian! Please!” Vanessa wailed, thrashing against the officers as tears ruined her heavy makeup. “Forgive me! I loved you! I did it all because I loved you!”
I did not look away. I met her gaze with the cold, immovable judgment of a father who had reclaimed his sanctuary.
“You don't know what love means, Vanessa,” I said softly. “You only know how to destroy.”

As the officers hauled the screaming, sobbing woman out the front doors and down the driveway under the flashing red and blue lights of four squad cruisers, the heavy oak doors closed behind them.
The house was clean. The poison was gone forever.
