Chapter 5 - The Sister-in-Law’s Silent Confession

In the grand drawing room on the main floor, Vanessa sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, surrounded by four armed Black Watch security operators.

Her former arrogance had completely evaporated, replaced by a frantic, sweaty desperation.

Julian Hayes, the state’s most formidable corporate and criminal litigator, laid out three thick portfolios on the glass coffee table.

“Miss Kensington,” Julian began in an icy, measured baritone. “Let us review what has been discovered in the last two hours.”

Julian clicked through the evidence displays:

The Medical Examiner’s Exhumation Order: Signed by Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling, authorizing the immediate forensic toxicological review of Claire Vance’s tissue samples.

The Grand Jury Indictment Packet: Charges of Attempted Murder of a Minor, Felony Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and First-Degree Premeditated Murder by Poisoning.

The Financial Audit: Proof that Vanessa had forged Adrian’s signature to divert $6.2 million from the Vance Family Trust into a private shell company named Kensington Heritage LLC.

Vanessa leaped to her feet, screaming hysterically: “It’s a setup! Adrian, tell them! I did everything for you! Claire was weak! She was holding you back! I gave you four years of my youth!”

I walked across the drawing room, stopping three feet from her.

I looked at the woman I had nearly married, feeling no hatred, no rage—only the pristine, unyielding disgust one feels toward a venomous serpent.

“You didn't give me four years, Vanessa,” I said softly. “You stole four years of my wife’s life. You broke my son’s arm because he played his mother’s song. And tonight, you have reached the end of your road.”
