Chapter 3 - The USB and the Stolen Prescriptions

I did not scream. I did not throw the metal case.
I picked Ethan up in my left arm, holding him tight against my chest, and pulled my encrypted smartphone from my jacket with my right.
I tapped a single speed-dial button.
“Marcus,” I commanded.
“Yes, Mr. Vance?” Marcus Stone, Chief of Private Intelligence and Executive Security for Vance Capital, answered instantly.
“I need Dr. Robert Bennett, Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics at St. Jude, at the manor in fifteen minutes,” I said, each word precise as a scalpel. “And deploy the Black Watch security team. Seal every gate, every garage, and every perimeter exit of this estate. No one leaves. Especially not Miss Kensington.”
“Understood, sir. Lockdown initiated.”
Vanessa rushed forward, her designer heels clicking frantically across the hardwood floorboards.
“Adrian! You cannot hold me prisoner in this house!” Vanessa shrieked, reaching for her purse on the console table. “This is insane! I am your fiancée! We are getting married in six weeks! If you call your thugs on me, my father will pull every corporate bond from Vance Capital!”
I stopped at the archway leading to the private study, looking back at her with eyes of solid obsidian.
“Your father doesn't own those bonds, Vanessa,” I said softly. “I bought out your family’s holding debt fourteen months ago as a favor to you. You are standing in my house, breathing my air, and spending my money.”
I pushed open the heavy oak door of my study, set Ethan gently into the leather recliner, and plugged the titanium USB drive into my master terminal.
The multi-screen security array illuminated.
Displayed across the monitors were eighty-six scanned laboratory reports, audio recordings, and private pharmacy disbursement manifests compiled by Claire during her final days:
The Tampered Prescriptions: Forensic toxicology logs showing that Claire’s prescribed immune-modulating peptides had been systematically replaced with saline and concentrated doses of industrial beta-blockers.
The Offshore Wire Transfers: Over $1.8 million transferred from Vanessa’s personal account to an unlicensed biological supplier in Geneva.
The Diary Voice Notes: Claire’s recorded voice, weak but clear: “Vanessa told me today that once I’m gone, she will make sure Ethan forgets my face. She said Adrian deserves a woman who can give him an empire, not a dying invalid.”
Ethan looked up from the recliner, his small hand reaching over to touch my trembling fist.
“Daddy?” Ethan whispered, tears glistening in his hazel eyes. “Was Mommy trying to tell us something?”

I knelt beside my son, burying my face into his hair, kissing his cheek with fierce, unbreakable love.
“Mommy was protecting us, Ethan,” I whispered. “And now, Daddy is going to finish the song.”
