Chapter 2 - The Secret Chamber Beneath Middle C

Tucked inside the recessed soundboard cavity was a heavy velvet-lined metal case, taped securely to the inner spruce beam with aged electrical tape.

Vanessa took half a step forward, her eyes widening with a sudden, sharp panic that contradicted her previous arrogance.

“What is that?” Vanessa asked, her voice cracking slightly. “Adrian, that old piano has been collecting dust for years. You shouldn't be digging into the wood—”

I didn't answer. I reached inside the narrow compartment and pulled the metal case free.

On the lid, engraved in delicate, flowing script, were two words in Claire’s handwriting:

For Adrian & Ethan.

Beneath the velvet case lay a thick, sealed parchment envelope stamped with a red wax seal, along with a high-capacity encrypted titanium flash drive.

My fingers trembled slightly as I broke the wax seal.

Inside the envelope was a handwritten letter dated three weeks before Claire passed away in the oncology hospice:

‘My dearest Adrian,

If you are reading this, it means you have finally opened the compartment beneath the piano where we placed our first sheet music together. I pray that Ethan is playing our lullaby beside you.

Adrian, I did not die simply from respiratory failure. In my final months, when I was too weak to lift my head, I noticed discrepancies in my daily intravenous medications. Vanessa was the only person with access to my private bedside lockbox. Check the encrypted files on this drive. Look at the pharmacy logs. Protect our boy.’

The room plunged into a suffocating, sub-zero freeze.

My blood stopped flowing. The breath in my lungs turned into jagged glass.

I turned around slowly, holding the letter and the titanium drive in my hand.

Vanessa had backed all the way against the marble fireplace hearth, both hands clutching her throat, her face draining of every single drop of color until she looked like unpainted plaster.

“Adrian... that’s... that’s a delusion,” Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently. “Claire was hallucinating on morphine during her last month! You know how sick she was! I cared for her like a sister!”

“You didn't care for her, Vanessa,” I said, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute death. “You took her place.”
