Chapter 9 - The Federal Handcuffs on the 45th Floor

The vote was unanimous.

I brought my father’s heavy silver gavel down onto the walnut block with a resounding crack that resonated like thunder through the boardroom.

“Motion carried,” I declared. “You are both stripped of your corporate credentials, removed from the corporate registry, and barred from entering any Whitmore property worldwide.”

Senior Detective Marcus Vance stepped forward from the doorway, unholstering heavy steel transport handcuffs.

“Daniel Whitmore, Vanessa Cole,” Detective Vance announced loudly. “Under Illinois State Warrants 802 and 803, you are placed under immediate arrest for Grand Corporate Larceny, Falsification of Commercial Books, Interstate Wire Fraud, and Criminal Conspiracy.”

CLACK. CLACK.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped shut around Vanessa’s and Daniel’s wrists in front of thirty board directors and the blinding flashbulbs of four investigative journalists who had been admitted into the room.

Vanessa began sobbing hysterically, thrashing against the officers: “Daniel, do something! You told me you controlled this company!”

Daniel collapsed onto his knees on the carpet, weeping openly, looking up at me with eyes of hollow, bitter ruin.

“Claire… please,” Daniel wailed, tears soaking his designer collar. “Ten years! We were together ten years! Have mercy on me!”

I stood up slowly, walking down the center aisle until I stopped three feet from where he groveled on the floor.

I looked down at the man I had loved, feeling no anger, no hatred—only the clean, weightless freedom of a woman who had reclaimed her kingdom.

“I gave you ten years of loyalty, Daniel,” I whispered softly. “You traded it for a teardrop diamond and thirty seconds of applause in an elevator lobby.”

I looked at the weeping woman beside him.

“Take your ring, Vanessa. It’s the last thing you’ll ever own.”

The officers hauled the two sobbing convicts through the double doors, their pathetic cries echoing down the corridor until the elevator doors closed forever.

The boardroom was clean. The shadows were gone.
