Chapter 10 - Sunlight Over Paris

Two years after that unforgettable Valentine’s Day in the lobby, the warm afternoon sun bathed the private balcony of the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris.
The Eiffel Tower stood magnificent against the clear cobalt sky, the sparkling waters of the Seine winding gracefully through the City of Light below.
The air was sweet with the fragrance of blooming red roses, freshly baked butter croissants, and the rich aroma of espresso.
Under my sole leadership as Executive Chairwoman and CEO, Whitmore Dynamics had experienced the most profitable, innovative renaissance in its thirty-seven-year history. We had expanded our renewable tech operations into Europe and Asia, while dedicating $50 million to endow technical education scholarships for young women across North America.
Daniel and Vanessa had been sentenced to twelve and eight years of federal imprisonment respectively, with full asset forfeiture orders that recovered every single stolen cent back into our corporate treasury.
Footsteps clicked softly against the balcony flagstones.
Miriam Shaw walked out, dressed in a relaxed cream linen suit, holding two glasses of chilled vintage champagne.
She handed one to me, her eyes shining with deep, affectionate pride.
“A toast, Chairwoman Whitmore,” Miriam smiled warmly.
I turned, my dark hair dancing in the gentle Parisian breeze, wearing a flowing emerald silk sundress, looking healthy, radiant, and completely at peace.
I clinked my glass against hers.
“To what, Miriam?”
“To the woman who never needed anyone’s permission to own her crown,” Miriam answered softly.
I laughed—a light, joyful, unburdened sound that carried across the sunlit rooftops of Paris.
I leaned against the wrought-iron railing, taking a sip of the sparkling wine, looking out at the endless golden horizon.
