Chapter 6 - The Panic in the Executive Suite

By midnight, the top floor of the Whitmore Dynamics headquarters was engulfed in sheer, chaotic terror.
Daniel was pacing the length of his private corner office, his tie undone, downing glasses of scotch while Vanessa paced frantically near the floor-to-ceiling glass.
“Why didn't you tell me she owned eighty-three percent?!” Vanessa shrieked, slamming her palm onto Daniel’s mahogany desk. “You told me she was a simple housewife who had a tiny non-voting trust!”
“I didn't know!” Daniel screamed back, running his trembling hands through his hair. “Arthur Whitmore died five years ago! Claire never attended a single quarterly meeting! She never looked at the balance sheets! She never questioned a single expense!”
“Because she didn't need to, you idiot!” Vanessa hissed, her eyes wild with panic. “She had the voting power to crush us in a single heartbeat, and you handed her the match by kissing me in the lobby!”
The office door opened, and Julian Vance, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, stepped inside holding a stack of freshly printed audit manifests.
Julian looked like he hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.
“It’s worse than we thought,” Julian said, his voice shaking.
“What else did she find?” Daniel croaked.
“Miriam Shaw’s forensic accounting unit gained access to the subsidiary ledgers two hours ago,” Julian revealed. “They uncovered the two million dollars we diverted into the Bahamian shell company, the unauthorized bonuses we wired to Vanessa’s account last month, and the forged procurement signatures for the Harry Winston diamond.”
Daniel’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the imported wool rug.

“That’s federal wire fraud,” Daniel whispered, every drop of blood draining from his face.
“And grand corporate embezzlement,” Julian added coldly. “If Claire brings those documents to the board tomorrow morning, we aren't just getting fired. We’re going to federal prison.”
