Chapter 5 - The Frozen Black Cards at the Four Seasons

At 7:30 PM, inside the private dining suite of the Four Seasons Chicago, Vanessa Cole sat at the head of a twenty-person banquet table surrounded by executive vice presidents, lead software architects, and major venture capital partners.
Vanessa wore an emerald silk evening gown, her diamond teardrop ring catching the soft chandelier light as she toasted with vintage Dom Pérignon.
“To the new leadership of Whitmore Dynamics,” Vanessa declared with dazzling arrogance. “Within six months, we will take this firm public and consolidate our market dominance.”
The room erupted in polite applause.
The head sommelier stepped up to the table, discreetly presenting the leather bill folio to Vanessa.
Vanessa pulled out her company-issued Centurion Black card and slid it into the sleeve without looking.
Three minutes later, the restaurant’s general manager walked into the private suite accompanied by two security guards.
The manager leaned down beside Vanessa, his voice low but audible to the surrounding executives.
“I apologize for the interruption, Miss Cole, but the corporate card has been rejected with an administrative fraud code: Account Terminated by Primary Trustee.”
Vanessa’s smile hardened into an icy glare. “That is absurd. Try it again. I am the Chief Executive Officer of Whitmore Dynamics.”
“We attempted to process it three times, ma’am,” the manager replied firmly. “We also ran the secondary corporate Visa provided by Mr. Daniel Whitmore. That card was declined as well. The current tab is twenty-six thousand four hundred dollars. How would you like to settle this?”
Vanessa reached into her designer clutch with trembling fingers, pulling out her personal credit card.
DECLINED.
Murmurs of shock and embarrassment rippled across the table. Two senior venture partners exchanged uneasy glances, quietly standing up and placing their napkins on the table.
“Vanessa,” Vice President Harrison whispered. “What is going on with the company’s operating accounts?”
