Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT OWEN CAME HOME

Owen returned on a Sunday morning.
He arrived at Dominic's office accompanied by Elena Voss and two federal investigators.
I ran toward him.
“Owen!”
He caught me.
I held him so tightly he laughed.
“Gem, I can't breathe.”
I started crying.
He hugged me harder.
“I'm okay.”
I pulled back.
“Where have you been?”
He looked toward Elena.
“Helping her.”
I stared.
“With what?”
“Finding proof.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Your brother recognized suspicious cargo movements at the docks.”
Owen nodded.
“Containers listed as empty were being moved through private yards.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“What was inside them?”
Owen swallowed.
“Stolen medical equipment.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Hospital imaging machines. Surgical equipment. Things that disappeared from warehouses and were resold overseas.”
Dominic looked furious.
“Under my company's name?”
Elena nodded.
“Through Northbridge.”
The room became silent.
Dominic looked toward the investigators.
“I want every document.”
One of them nodded.
“We'll need your cooperation.”
Dominic looked at Owen.
Then at me.
And finally said:
“You have it.”
I stared.
For the first time, the most powerful man I'd ever known was choosing to surrender control.

Not because he was weak.
Because he was finally ready to confront the truth.
