Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO LEFT THE OFFICE

Six months later, I resigned.
Dominic stared at the letter.
“Why?”
I smiled nervously.
“Because I want to start my own financial consulting firm.”
He looked down.
Then back at me.
“You've been planning this?”
“For a while.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
I blinked.
“Good?”
He smiled.
“Gemma, you should never have been only my secretary.”
I laughed softly.
“That's a strange thing for my boss to say.”
He leaned back.
“I'm learning.”
I took a breath.
“I'm scared.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“What if I fail?”
“Then you learn and try again.”
I smiled.
“And what if I succeed?”
His expression softened.
“Then I'll be proud of you.”
My eyes filled.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Dominic stood.
He walked around the desk.
Stopped a respectful distance away.
And asked:
“Would you consider having dinner with me?”
I stared.
“As your employee?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice softened.
“As a woman I've fallen in love with.”
My heart stopped.
“Dominic…”
He continued.
“I waited because I didn't want you to feel obligated.”
I looked down.
Then back at him.
“And now?”
He smiled.
“Now you're free to tell me no.”
I laughed through tears.
“And if I say yes?”
May you like
His smile widened.
“Then I'll make a reservation.”
