Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNTANT'S WARNING

Three days later, a package arrived at my apartment.
No return address.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a photograph.
Owen.
Alive.
Sitting in a small room beside Elena Voss.
On the back, someone had written:
THE MONEY ISN'T THE REAL SECRET.
My hands shook.
I called Dominic.
He arrived twenty minutes later with an independent digital-forensics specialist.
The flash drive contained scanned contracts, old bank statements, and a video recording.
Elena appeared on screen.
Older than in the security footage.
Her face lined with exhaustion.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Dominic.”
Her voice trembled.
“If you're watching this, your father lied to you.”
Dominic went completely still.
Elena continued.
“Northbridge Maritime Trust was never dissolved.”
She held up a document.
“It was transferred.”
Dominic leaned forward.
“To whom?” he whispered.
Elena looked down.
Then back at the camera.
“To the person your father trusted most.”
The screen went black.
A new image appeared.
A signature.
A name.
Dante Bellini.
I looked at Dominic.
His face had gone white.
Dante.
His underboss.
His closest friend.
The man who had sat beside him during the meeting when I fell asleep.
Dominic whispered:
“No.”
Then the video resumed.
Elena's voice returned.
“And Dominic, there's something else.”
May you like
A pause.
“The money was used to finance a plan to remove you.”
