Chapter 15 - THE WEDDING DRESS SHE WORE FOR HERSELF

Two years after Clare walked away from the Hawthorne Hotel wedding, she stood in front of a mirror wearing a white dress.

Not the same dress.

Not the one Ethan had watched her put on before leaving her on the sidewalk.

This dress was different.

Simple silk.

Soft sleeves.

A small row of pearl buttons.

And no heavy train.

Clare smiled at her reflection.

Behind her, Nora wiped away tears.

“You look beautiful.”

Clare laughed.

“You're crying already?”

Nora nodded.

“Absolutely.”

Clare turned.

“Don't start. You'll make me cry.”

Nora hugged her.

For a moment, Clare remembered the morning she'd stood on a Boston sidewalk.

The cold air.

The white limousine.

Vanessa's laughter.

Ethan's dismissive voice.

It's just one car.

She remembered the moment she'd removed her engagement ring.

And the terrifying freedom that followed.

Now she was standing in a small bridal suite overlooking the Atlantic.

Preparing to marry Julian Cross.

A man who had never asked her to become smaller so someone else could feel important.

Outside, the ceremony was simple.

Forty guests.

A garden.

White flowers.

And the sound of the ocean.

Julian stood beneath an arch of greenery.

When Clare appeared, he smiled.

Not politely.

Not distractedly.

But with the unmistakable joy of a man who had been waiting for exactly this woman.

She walked toward him.

He took her hands.

“You're beautiful,” he whispered.

Clare smiled.

“Thank you.”

He leaned closer.

“And for the record, the car is waiting whenever you want it.”

She laughed.

“I know.”

He smiled.

“It's your day.”

Clare shook her head.

“No.”

She squeezed his hands.

“It's ours.”

Julian's eyes filled.

And when they exchanged vows, Clare didn't think about Ethan.

Didn't think about Vanessa.

Didn't think about the wedding she'd canceled.

She thought about the life she'd chosen.

The work she loved.

The friends who stood beside her.

The woman she'd become.

And the man who loved her without making her compete for a place in his heart.

Later, at the reception, Julian held out his hand.

“May I have this dance, Mrs. Cross?”

Clare smiled.

“You may.”

They moved slowly beneath the stars.

And for the first time, she understood something she'd spent years trying to learn.

A wedding dress doesn't make a woman a bride.

A limousine doesn't make a marriage.

And a ring doesn't make someone worthy of your forever.

Love is the person who chooses you when choosing you requires nothing more than being honest about what matters.

Clare rested her head against Julian's chest.

He kissed her hair.

And somewhere beyond the garden, the ocean moved quietly beneath the moon.

Two years earlier, she'd been left standing on a sidewalk while another woman rode away in her bridal limousine.

Today, she was exactly where she wanted to be.

May you like

Not because someone had finally given her the wedding she deserved.

But because she'd given herself permission to walk away from the one she didn't.
