Chapter 13 - THE LAST LIE VANESSA TOLD
Vanessa tried one final time to regain Ethan's attention.
She claimed Clare had been seeing Julian before the wedding.
Ethan stared.
“That's not true.”
Vanessa shrugged.
“How do you know?”
“Because Clare met him after she left.”
Vanessa looked away.
Ethan's expression hardened.
“Why are you doing this?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Because you were supposed to choose me.”
Silence.
Ethan stared.
Vanessa's face changed.
She realized what she'd said.
But it was too late.
“You were supposed to choose me,” she repeated quietly.
Ethan shook his head.
“Vanessa.”
She began crying.
“I've been here your whole life.”
He looked at her.
“And I treated that as a reason to let you hurt someone I loved.”
Vanessa stared.
Ethan took a breath.
“I can't keep doing this.”
Her expression hardened.
“So that's it?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
He walked toward the door.
Vanessa called after him.
“You'll regret this!”
Ethan stopped.
Then looked back.

“I already regret what I lost.”
And he left.
