Chapter 8 - THE SECRET IN THE SALVATORE FAMILY

Matteo Salvatore had always resented Alessandro.

They were raised together.

Educated together.

Taught the same family rules.

But when Alessandro's father died, Alessandro inherited control of the legitimate businesses.

Matteo received money.

Property.

A minority stake in several companies.

He believed he deserved more.

Over the years, he quietly rebuilt connections to the family's criminal past.

Horse trafficking.

Fraudulent transport documents.

Money laundering through agricultural suppliers.

Daniel Mercer became one of his most useful partners.

But their plan had a larger purpose.

They wanted Alessandro's estate.

Not merely its horses.

The land.

The private roads.

The shipping permits.

The legitimate reputation attached to the Salvatore name.

If stolen horses could be moved through the estate, they could be exported under clean documentation.

And if Alessandro refused?

Matteo intended to make him look responsible.

***

Rebecca uncovered the scheme through financial records.

Unauthorized contracts had been signed using forged approvals.

Several shipments were scheduled under Salvatore-owned companies.

The paperwork pointed toward Alessandro.

But the electronic signatures originated from Matteo's office.

Rebecca placed the evidence on Alessandro's desk.

“They're trying to implicate you.”

He stared.

“Of course they are.”

“There's more.”

She opened another file.

“Daniel Mercer has been communicating with the staffing agency.”

Alessandro looked up.

“About Elena?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca hesitated.

“He asked for confirmation that she was living on your property.”

Alessandro felt cold.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

The day Elena was hired.

The trap had been planned from the beginning.

Daniel wanted Elena close to Alessandro.

Perhaps because he believed the Salvatore estate would protect him from police scrutiny.

Perhaps because he intended to use Elena to pressure Alessandro.

Either way, the danger was immediate.

***

Elena learned the truth from Rebecca.

She sat quietly while the attorney explained the records.

When Rebecca finished, Elena asked:

“Did Daniel arrange my job?”

“It appears likely.”

“Then he knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked down at her belly.

The baby moved.

She placed both hands over the movement.

For months, she had believed she was hiding successfully.

Now she understood that Daniel had allowed her to feel safe while watching from a distance.

Her stomach tightened.

Then she looked up.

“I want to leave the estate.”

Rebecca nodded.

“We can arrange somewhere independent.”

Elena swallowed.

“Will Alessandro be angry?”

Rebecca looked surprised.

“Why would he?”

“Because he offered me the cottage.”

Rebecca's expression softened.

“Elena, accepting help doesn't mean surrendering your right to leave.”

***

When Alessandro heard her decision, he didn't argue.

He arranged for her attorney to coordinate safe accommodation.

Elena watched him.

“That's it?”

“What else?”

“You're not going to tell me it's dangerous?”

“It is dangerous.”

“Then why aren't you stopping me?”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Because you're not my prisoner.”

Elena's eyes filled.

He stepped closer.

Then stopped.

“Elena, I care about what happens to you.”

She looked up.

“But caring about you doesn't give me ownership of your choices.”

For a long moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you.”

She moved to a protected apartment two days later.

Alessandro watched the car leave.

For the first time in years, he understood that protecting someone sometimes meant allowing them to walk away.
