Chapter 11 - THE BABY WHO ARRIVED EARLY

Isabella Torres was born six hours later.
Small.
Loud.
Perfect.
Elena cried when she heard her daughter.
The doctor placed the baby against her chest.
Elena stared at the tiny face.
The dark hair.
The miniature fingers.
The impossibly small mouth.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
Her voice broke.
“I'm your mama.”
Alessandro stood near the doorway.
He had remained at the hospital because Elena asked him to.
He had not entered the delivery room until she invited him.
Now he watched the woman who had walked into a paddock with a sugar cube hold her newborn daughter.
He had witnessed violence.
Power.
Loss.
Men begging for mercy.
But nothing had ever moved him like the sight of Elena whispering to her child.
Elena looked up.
“Alessandro?”
“Yes?”
“Come meet her.”
He approached slowly.
The baby opened her eyes.
Alessandro stopped breathing.
“She's beautiful.”
Elena smiled.
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“May I?”
She nodded.
He carefully held Isabella while Elena adjusted the blanket.
The baby settled against his chest.
Alessandro stared.
For a moment, the world outside the hospital room disappeared.
No criminal empire.
No family feud.
No threats.
Just a tiny human being breathing against his heart.
He whispered:
“Hello, Isabella.”
Elena watched his face.
And knew something had changed.
***
Two days later, Daniel Mercer learned about the birth.
His attorney sent a letter asserting Daniel's parental rights and requesting information about the child.
Elena felt the old fear return.
Dana Brooks reviewed the letter.
“It's a legal request. We respond through counsel.”
Elena nodded.
“Can he take her?”
“Not simply because he demands it.”
“But he's her father.”
“That doesn't erase the court's obligation to consider her safety.”
Elena looked at Isabella sleeping beside her.
“I won't let him hurt her.”
Dana's expression softened.
“We'll take the appropriate steps.”
***
Alessandro learned about the letter that evening.
His first instinct was rage.
He wanted to find Daniel.
Make him afraid.
Make him regret every threat.
Then he remembered Elena's words.
I don't want my daughter born into a war.
He called Rebecca.
“Coordinate with Dana. Make sure Elena has every resource she needs.”
Rebecca paused.
“That's all?”
Alessandro looked toward the nursery where Isabella slept.
“Yes.”
“You're changing.”
He smiled faintly.
“Apparently.”
***
That night, Elena found Alessandro sitting outside the hospital room.
He looked exhausted.
She sat beside him.
“You can go home.”
“I know.”
“You've been here for hours.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“Then why are you still here?”
He looked at her.
“Because I want to be.”
Elena's eyes filled.
He reached for her hand.
Then stopped.
She placed her hand in his.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Elena whispered:
“Thank you for staying.”
Alessandro squeezed her hand.
May you like
“Thank you for asking me to.”
