Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO BE GENTLE

A year after Isabella's birth, Elena opened a small equine rehabilitation program.
It began with three rescued horses.
An injured mare.
An elderly gelding.
And a frightened young stallion recovered from an illegal transport operation.
Elena worked with licensed veterinarians and experienced trainers.
She handled administration, rehabilitation planning, and public education.
She refused to enter dangerous situations alone.
Her experience with Midnight had taught her compassion.
The months afterward had taught her responsibility.
Alessandro provided an initial donation through a transparent charitable grant.
Elena insisted the organization have an independent board.
He agreed.
She named it:
THE SECOND CHANCE EQUINE FOUNDATION
The foundation helped rescue and rehabilitate neglected horses while educating owners about humane handling.
Elena loved the work.
She also loved being Isabella's mother.
Her daughter had Alessandro wrapped around her tiny finger.
He denied it.
Nobody believed him.

One afternoon, Alessandro sat on the grass while Isabella attempted to place a flower crown on his head.
Owen watched from a distance.
The feared Alessandro Salvatore sat perfectly still as a toddler decorated him with daisies.
Owen took a photograph.
Alessandro looked up.
“Delete that.”
Owen smiled.
“Of course, sir.”
He did not delete it.
Elena laughed from the porch.
“Leave him alone.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Thank you.”
She smiled.
“I was talking to you.”
He stared.
Then laughed.
***
That evening, Alessandro asked Elena to walk with him.
They followed the path beside the vineyards.
The sunset painted the hills gold.
Elena looked at him.
“You're unusually quiet.”
“I'm thinking.”
“Dangerous.”
He smiled.
Then stopped.
“Elena.”
She turned.
He took a breath.
“I love you.”
Her expression softened.
“I know.”
“I've loved you for a long time.”
“I know that too.”
He smiled faintly.
“Then this should be easier.”
“What should?”
He reached into his pocket.
A small velvet box appeared.
Elena stopped breathing.
Alessandro opened it.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
Elegant.
Understated.
Nothing like the extravagant jewelry his family once used to display wealth.
He looked at her.
“I don't want you to marry me because I helped you.”
She swallowed.
“I know.”
“I don't want you to feel you owe me anything.”
“I don't.”
He nodded.
“I want you to marry me because you want to build a life together.”
Elena's eyes filled.
Alessandro knelt.
“Elena Torres, will you marry me?”
She stared at him.
Then began laughing through tears.
“You're kneeling in the dirt.”
“I've survived worse.”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
Alessandro looked up.
“Yes?”
“Yes, Alessandro.”
He stood.
She kissed him.
From the nearby cottage, Isabella shouted:
“Mama!”
They laughed.
Alessandro looked toward the sound.
Then back at Elena.
“Does this mean I get to be officially outnumbered?”
Elena smiled.
“You've been outnumbered for a year.”
He kissed her again.

And for once, the man who had spent his life trying to control everything was perfectly happy not to.
