Chapter 12 - THE PRICE OF A SALVATORE PROMISE

Daniel Mercer was arrested three weeks after Isabella's birth.

Investigators had assembled evidence of horse theft, document fraud, and interstate trafficking.

Matteo Salvatore was arrested separately.

Patrick Doyle agreed to cooperate.

Marcus Webb was identified as a suspect in the stable fire.

The investigation expanded across several states.

Elena gave testimony about the records she had discovered while working for Daniel.

She also documented his threats concerning her pregnancy and their child.

The process was exhausting.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

Dana represented her interests.

Rebecca coordinated relevant business records.

Alessandro cooperated with investigators.

And Elena made her own decisions.

***

One afternoon, Daniel's attorney proposed a private settlement.

Financial support.

A confidentiality agreement.

And a request that Elena withdraw certain allegations.

She stared at the document.

Then looked at Dana.

“Can I refuse?”

“Yes.”

“Then I refuse.”

Dana nodded.

“Understood.”

Elena looked down at Isabella.

For months, Daniel had convinced her that money could decide everything.

Now she understood that some things couldn't be bought.

Her daughter's safety.

Her own dignity.

The truth.

***

Alessandro's cooperation came at a price.

Several Salvatore businesses were investigated.

Some contracts were suspended.

Former associates turned against him.

Matteo's supporters accused him of betraying the family.

Alessandro continued cooperating.

One evening, Owen found him alone in his office.

“Sir, you're losing money.”

Alessandro looked up.

“I know.”

“Your father would never have allowed this.”

Alessandro considered.

“No.”

Owen hesitated.

“Then why are you?”

Alessandro looked toward a photograph on his desk.

Elena holding Isabella.

Midnight standing beyond the fence.

“Because my father taught me how to keep power.”

He paused.

“But nobody taught me what power was supposed to be for.”

That evening, Alessandro visited Elena.

She was sitting on the cottage porch with Isabella asleep against her chest.

He stopped.

“You look tired.”

“I have a newborn.”

“Fair point.”

She smiled.

He sat beside her.

For a while, they watched the vineyards.

Then Elena asked:

“Do you regret helping me?”

Alessandro looked surprised.

“No.”

“Even with everything happening?”

“No.”

She studied him.

“Why?”

He looked at Isabella.

Then at Elena.

“Because for the first time in years, I know what kind of man I want to be.”

Elena's eyes filled.

She whispered:

“And what kind is that?”

Alessandro smiled.

“One who deserves to be invited onto this porch.”

She laughed softly.

Then leaned against him.

For the first time, he put his arm around her without either of them feeling afraid.
