Chapter 13 - THE TRIAL OF MATTEO SALVATORE

The trials began the following spring.

Matteo faced charges related to fraudulent shipping, money laundering, and conspiracy.

Daniel faced separate charges connected to stolen horses and falsified transport records.

The stable fire was investigated through its own criminal proceedings.

Elena testified about Daniel's business records.

She spoke clearly.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not pretend to remember things she couldn't.

When the defense attorney questioned her decision to leave Montana, she answered simply.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Mr. Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“Yet you never reported him immediately.”

“I was trying to protect myself and my unborn child.”

The attorney leaned forward.

“Isn't it true you later became involved with Alessandro Salvatore?”

Elena looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

“And Mr. Salvatore is a wealthy man?”

“Yes.”

“More wealthy than Mr. Mercer?”

“I don't know their financial statements.”

A few people smiled.

The attorney frowned.

“Did Mr. Salvatore offer you money?”

“He offered help.”

“And you accepted?”

“Some of it.”

“So you benefited financially from your relationship?”

Elena took a breath.

“I worked at his estate before I knew him personally. I later accepted temporary accommodation and legal referrals. None of that changes the records I found while working for Daniel.”

The courtroom became quiet.

The attorney looked down.

Elena continued.

“I didn't invent stolen horses because somebody helped me.”

***

The evidence proved extensive.

Transport records.

Veterinary identification documents.

Financial transfers.

Witness statements.

Matteo and Daniel were convicted on multiple counts.

The stable fire case also resulted in convictions against those responsible.

Elena left the courthouse with Isabella in her arms.

Reporters called her name.

She kept walking.

Alessandro waited beside the car.

He didn't speak until they were inside.

Then he asked:

“How do you feel?”

Elena looked at her daughter.

“Tired.”

He nodded.

“Anything else?”

She considered.

“Free.”

Alessandro smiled.

“Good.”

***

The custody proceedings continued separately.

Elena obtained orders addressing Isabella's safety, and Daniel's access was restricted according to the court's findings.

She understood that legal matters involving children could evolve over time.

But the immediate danger had diminished.

She no longer lived in hiding.

She could use her real name.

Open a bank account.

Apply for work.

Take Isabella to the park.

And sleep without expecting Daniel at the door.

One evening, Elena stood beside Midnight's stall.

Alessandro approached.

“Thinking?”

“Always.”

“About what?”

She smiled.

“The first day I came here.”

“The paddock?”

“Yes.”

He looked at Midnight.

“You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

She laughed.

“I nearly gave myself one.”

Alessandro became serious.

“Would you do it again?”

Elena considered.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

She continued.

“I'd call the veterinarian and get everyone to back away. I was lucky.”

Alessandro smiled.

“You've learned something.”

“So have you.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

She touched his hand.

“That asking for help isn't weakness.”

He nodded.

“No.”

Then she smiled.

May you like

“It's wisdom.”
