Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY BUILT ON HER SACRIFICES

I met Walter Fenwick at his office the following afternoon.
The building overlooked downtown Charlotte.
His office was enormous.
But Walter didn't make me feel small.
He offered coffee.
Asked about the twins.
Then placed a folder on the table.
“Your husband has been seeking financing from Fenwick Capital.”
I nodded.
“He mentioned something about expansion.”
Walter studied me.
“Did he tell you how much?”
I shook my head.
“Twenty-eight million dollars.”
I stared.
“What?”
He nodded.
“Your husband's company has grown quickly.”
I looked down.
“I know.”
“But growth and stability aren't the same thing.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Walter opened the folder.
“Several of his financial projections appear inconsistent with the supporting records.”
My stomach tightened.
“Are you saying he lied?”
Walter shook his head.
“I'm saying our analysts have questions.”
I looked at the documents.
Then stopped.
A familiar spreadsheet.
A familiar formatting style.
My formatting style.
I recognized the column headings.
The formulas.
The notes.
I'd created the original version years earlier.
I looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
Walter studied me.
“From your husband's financing package.”
May you like
My hands began shaking.
“That's my work.”
