Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CHRISTMAS GALA

Months later, Walter Fenwick invited me to another meeting.
His analysts had completed their review.
Several financial representations in Colin's financing package required correction.
The company had overstated certain projected revenues.
Some expenses had been categorized inconsistently.
And the materials included work I'd prepared years earlier without identifying my contribution.
Walter looked at me.
“Mrs. Breckett, I want to be clear.”
I nodded.
“Fenwick Capital is not proceeding with the financing.”
I swallowed.
“Because of the gala?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His expression was serious.
“Because the financial package did not meet our standards.”
I looked down.
Walter continued.
“What happened at the gala told me something about your husband's judgment.”
He paused.
“But the financing decision was based on the records.”
I nodded.
For some reason, that mattered.

I didn't want Colin punished because someone powerful liked me.
I wanted the truth to matter.
