Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Police Cell

On Friday afternoon, Ryan visited the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center for the mandatory property dissolution deposition.

Accompanied by Attorney Karen Vance, Ryan sat behind the thick Plexiglas partition in the secure visitor suite.

The heavy steel door buzzed, and Caroline was escorted in by two female corrections deputies.

She was wearing a coarse orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists and ankles bound in heavy transport chains. Her styled blonde hair was unwashed, her face pale, and her eyes bloodshot from days of non-stop weeping.

She picked up the black telephone receiver with trembling hands.

Ryan lifted his receiver, looking at her with cold, unyielding detachment.

“Ryan...” Caroline choked out, pressing her handcuffed hands against the glass. “Please... look at me. I’m your wife. I made a terrible, horrific mistake. I was desperate... Julian was threatening to expose my debts... I never wanted Chloe to be hurt!”

“You put a broom in my son's face because he gave a starving child a piece of bread, Caroline,” Ryan said, his voice level, quiet, and completely devoid of mercy.

“Ryan, we can fix this!” she pleaded, tears and snot running down her face. “Tell the prosecutor you forgive me! If you submit a spousal mitigation letter, the judge can reduce the kidnapping charge to family custody interference! I can get probation!”

Ryan pulled a court-certified decree from his leather folder and held it flat against the glass partition.

It was the final decree of Marital Annulment ab initio on the grounds of felony criminal fraud, alongside a permanent lifetime protective order.

“As of ten o'clock this morning, our marriage is legally erased,” Ryan told her, each word landing like an iron hammer. “Your name has been stripped from every deed, every account, and every record in my life. You will spend the next twenty-five years staring at concrete walls, wondering what it feels like to be locked in the dark.”

Caroline let out a strangled shriek of despair, slamming her forehead against the glass.

Ryan gently hung up the receiver, stood up, and walked out the door without looking back a single time.
