Chapter 4 - The Emergency Room Protocol

Within six minutes, the quiet suburban street was painted in flashing red, white, and blue strobe lights.
Two ambulances from the Fairfax County Trauma Center and four marked patrol cruisers surrounded the house.
Deputy Marcus Cole of the Major Crimes Division sprinted up the front walk with his firearm drawn, stepping past Evan on the porch and entering the foyer.
Caroline was sitting on the bottom step of the staircase, weeping hysterically, her hands over her face.
“Nobody move!” Deputy Cole commanded.
Ryan stepped out of the kitchen holding Chloe, who was wrapped in a clean bath towel. “The suspect is on the stairs, Officer. The child requires immediate critical medical stabilization.”
Paramedic Sarah Jenkins took Chloe into her arms, checking her pulse and pupillary response.
“Severe acute malnutrition, second-degree frictional contusions on both wrists, and mild respiratory distress from drywall dust inhalation,” Paramedic Jenkins reported urgently. “Core temperature is ninety-five point two. Prep an IV line of pediatric warm saline and transfer her to the mobile trauma unit now!”
Deputy Cole looked at the broken kitchen wall, the sledgehammer lying on the floor, and the narrow crawlspace behind the baseboard.
His jaw tightened into rigid granite.
He turned toward Caroline, unholstering his heavy steel handcuffs.
“Caroline Vance-Miller,” Deputy Cole announced, his voice echoing through the ruined house. “You are under arrest for Aggravated Kidnapping of a Minor, Felony Child Endangerment with Intent to Cause Grievous Harm, and Deprivation of Civil Rights.”
Click. Snap.
The cold steel locked around Caroline’s wrists with a sharp, resonant crack.
“Ryan! Tell them!” Caroline screamed as two deputies hauled her toward the front door. “I am your wife! Evan is my stepson! You can't let them take me to jail!”
Ryan looked at her with eyes colder than the November wind outside.
May you like
“You are not a wife, Caroline,” Ryan replied. “You are a monster who put a five-year-old baby in a hole.”
