Chapter 2 - The Sledgehammer on the Drywall

================================================================================

Ryan returned to the kitchen holding a ten-pound forged steel sledgehammer.

Caroline stood directly in front of the baseboard vent, her arms spread wide, tears of pure hysteria streaming down her face.

“Ryan, stop!” Caroline shrieked, her voice echoing off the subway tiles. “If you break that wall, you will destroy this family! You don't know what you're doing!”

“Get out of my way, Caroline,” Ryan warned, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with lethal authority.

“I did it for us!” she cried out, her manicured fingers clawing at the drywall. “We were drowning in mortgage debts! Julian said this was the only way!”

Ryan didn't ask who Julian was. He took one step forward, grabbed Caroline by the forearm, and moved her firmly three feet to the side.

He raised the heavy sledgehammer over his right shoulder.

CRACK.

The forged steel head struck the drywall above the baseboard with concussive force. Plaster dust exploded into the air. Studs splintered.

Behind the fractured wall, a sharp, terrified gasp echoed through the dust.

Ryan swung a second time. THUD.

A three-foot section of gypsum board collapsed inward. Ryan dropped the hammer, tore away the fiberglass insulation with his gloved hands, and pointed his tactical flashlight into the dark cavity.

The space was not a standard heating duct.

It was a reinforced, soundproofed void created by sealing off the dead space between the kitchen pantry and the old basement coal chute. A narrow wooden shelf sat three feet below the kitchen floor level, covered in a dirty fleece blanket, a half-empty water bottle, and a child’s pink winter boot.

Curled in the corner, shielding her eyes from the blinding flashlight beam, was a little girl.

She looked no older than five. Her dark hair was matted with dust, her clothes were filthy, and her lips were cracked and grey with dehydration.

“Please don't hit me,” the little girl sobbed, holding up two tiny, bruised arms. “I didn't mean to make noise.”

Ryan’s throat closed so tightly he could barely draw air.

He reached his arms through the broken studs, ignoring the sharp wooden splinters tearing into his forearms, and gently scooped the shivering child into his chest.
