Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT ELENA DISAPPEAREDThe kidnapping attempt happened on a Friday evening.

I had just left the clinic after visiting my mother.
A dark van pulled up beside the sidewalk.
Two men stepped out.
One grabbed my arm.
The other demanded my phone.
I screamed.
A passerby shouted.
The men tried to force me toward the vehicle.
Then a police patrol car turned onto the street.
The attackers released me and fled.
I fell to the pavement.
My hands shook so badly I couldn't stand.
When Dante arrived at the hospital, his face was white.
"Elena."
I looked up.
He crossed the room.
"Are you hurt?"
"Just bruises."
He closed his eyes.
I reached for him.
He held my hand.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
I shook my head.
"You didn't do this."
"But my world brought them to you."
I looked at him.
"Then change your world."
He stared at me.
I continued.
"Don't promise me revenge. Don't promise me someone will suffer."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Promise me this ends."
Dante looked toward the window.
Then nodded.
"It will."
That night, he contacted his attorneys and began formal cooperation with authorities investigating the Sorello network.
He understood that doing so would expose his own businesses to scrutiny.
He accepted that risk.
