Chapter 3 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE BOILER WALLAt six the next morning, Dante ordered an independent forensic team to examine the old boiler room.

I stood beside Nicole in the hallway while technicians photographed the room.

The air smelled of damp concrete and old fuel.

Nicole's iron cot remained against the wall.

A thin blanket lay folded at its foot.

Dante stared at it.

"Get that out of here."

One of the guards stepped forward.

Dante stopped him.

"Wait."

He turned toward the forensic photographer.

"Document everything first."

I looked at him.

He understood now.

This wasn't simply a room.

It was evidence.

Nicole pointed toward the boiler.

Behind a removable maintenance panel was a small concealed compartment.

Inside lay a weathered metal case.

The technicians photographed it before opening it.

The case contained an old digital camera, two storage devices, and a folded letter.

Dante stared at the contents.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father's.

The letter was addressed to Nicole.

Dante opened it carefully.

His hands trembled.

My brave boy,

If anything happens to me, remember that being frightened doesn't make you weak.

It means you understand what matters.

Your brother will protect you. And one day, when you're ready, tell him what you saw.

Dante stopped reading.

His eyes filled.

Nicole reached for the letter.

Dante handed it to him.

The boy pressed it against his chest.

The camera's memory was damaged.

The forensic team arranged for specialists to recover what they could.

Meanwhile, Dante contacted his attorney and requested that the recovered materials be preserved for investigators.

He was no longer interested in private revenge.

He wanted evidence.

He wanted answers.

And he wanted Nicole to have a future that didn't depend on violence.

That afternoon, I found Dante standing in the garden.

He was staring toward the distant trees.

"Mr. Falcone?"

He turned.

"Elena."

"Nicole's asking for you."

"I'll come."

But he didn't move.

I hesitated.

"Are you all right?"

He laughed bitterly.

"No."

I waited.

He looked at me.

"My father died when I was twenty-five. I inherited everything. The businesses. The enemies. The responsibilities."

He paused.

"And I thought keeping Nicole inside these walls meant he was safe."

I looked toward the house.

"Sometimes walls keep danger in."

Dante stared at me.

Then nodded slowly.

"Yes."

That evening, the forensic specialist called.

Some of the camera footage had been recovered.

It showed the Falcone warehouse seven years earlier.

A man entered a restricted maintenance corridor shortly before the fire.

His face was partially visible.

He wore a gray coat.

And on his right hand was a distinctive silver ring.

Dante recognized it.

Vittorio Sorello had worn that ring at dinner.

Dante watched the footage twice.

Then turned off the screen.

His voice was barely audible.

"He was there."

I stood beside him.

Nicole sat in his wheelchair near the door.

He was crying silently.

Dante knelt before his brother.

"I'm sorry."

Nicole shook his head.

Dante continued.

"I should have believed you."

Nicole reached forward.

May you like

Then wrapped his arms around Dante's neck.

For the first time in seven years, the two brothers cried together.
