Chapter 9 - The First Word

Noah’s language returned slowly.
Not as a miracle.
As work.
Some days, he spoke three words.
Other days, none.
Evelyn never treated silence as failure.
She taught me to sit without demanding progress.
Caleb entered long-term rehabilitation.
He and Evelyn built a relationship through board games and folded animals.
Lily struggled more.
Survival had become her identity.
Without hiding, she did not know who to be.
She entered counseling and studied child advocacy.
One spring morning, Noah found me in the garden.
He held a paper bird.
“Daddy.”
I turned.
He had said the word before.
But never while reaching for me.
He placed the bird in my hand.
“You came back.”
My chest tightened.
“I did.”
“Mom didn’t.”
I knelt.
“No. She wanted to.”
“Did she love me?”
“Yes.”
“How know?”
“She fought for the truth even when it was dangerous.”
Noah looked toward Evelyn.
“Like her?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
Then he said the sentence I had waited years to hear and feared I did not deserve.
“I love you, Daddy.”
May you like
I held him only after he opened his arms.
