Chapter 6 - The Child Beneath the Red Umbrella

The raids rescued eleven children.

Caleb was found inside a locked residential wing under heavy sedation.

He survived.

When Evelyn entered his hospital room, he did not recognize her.

Lily stood near the wall.

Evelyn did not force closeness.

She placed a paper bird on the table.

Caleb looked at it.

Then at her.

“Are you staff?”

“No.”

“Family?”

Her eyes filled.

“If you want me to be.”

Caleb did not answer.

But he kept the bird.

Board members called the decision reckless.

I called it overdue.

Wealth had not made me powerful enough to protect Noah.

It had insulated me from questions.

Lily eventually met Noah.

He studied her red umbrella.

Then touched the silver bird necklace.

“You,” he whispered.

Lily knelt.

“I found you on the road.”

Noah hugged her.

It lasted only seconds.

May you like

But Lily closed her eyes as though a ten-year burden had finally shifted.
