Chapter 8 - The Question at the Well

Silence fell over the terrace, broken only by the chirping of crickets in the olive groves.
Maya looked up from her plate, running over to wrap her small arms around Matteo’s leg. “We don't want to go, Mr. Matteo. I want to stay here with Leo and the peacocks.”
Matteo’s hand rested gently on Maya’s curly hair, his touch infinitely tender. But his eyes remained locked on mine, waiting for my answer.
“What do you want, Clara?” he asked quietly.
I stood up from the table and walked to the stone balustrade overlooking the rolling hills, where the ancient stone wishing well caught the amber rays of the setting sun.
Matteo followed, stopping a pace behind me.
“When I walked through that curtain in premium economy,” I said, looking out over the valley, “I was a broken woman with an empty bank account, terrified of my own shadow. I thought my only purpose was to survive.”
I turned to face him.
“You gave me safety, Matteo. But more than that, you treated me as an equal. You trusted me with your most precious treasure.”
“You are not an employee to me, Clara,” Matteo murmured, closing the space between us until I could feel the radiating warmth of his chest. “You haven't been since the moment you held Leo against your heart. I fell in love with your courage before I even knew your name.”
He reached into his pocket and brought out a small, dark velvet box.
He opened it, revealing a stunning, custom-cast platinum ring set with a flawless emerald surrounded by two brilliant round diamonds.
“One stone for Maya. One stone for Leo. And the emerald for the woman who saved us both,” Matteo said, his voice deep and unsteady with raw emotion. “Stay here with me. Not as a nurse. Not under a contract. As my wife, my partner, and the mother of my children.”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in my eyes. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck.
Matteo pulled me flush against him, lifting me off the stone terrace as his mouth found mine in a fierce, passionate kiss that sealed every broken piece of our pasts into an unbreakable future.
