Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Exposed

When the vault door disengaged, the air in the upper corridor smelled of sulfur and cordite.

Matteo stood in the hallway flanked by Lorenzo and six armed tactical guards. Plaster dust dusted his shoulders, and the marble floor of the west gallery was scarred with bullet holes, but the compound was secure.

“Corrado’s men didn't come to assassinate,” Lorenzo reported, holding up an encrypted satellite tablet recovered from one of the neutralized intruders. “They came to extract the children. They were feeding live telemetry to an offshore IP address.”

Matteo snatched the tablet, his eyes scanning the intercepted data logs. His face darkened into a terrifying mask of rage.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping out into the hall.

Matteo turned the screen toward me.

On the display was a high-resolution wire-transfer confirmation: two million euros transferred from an escrow account in Zurich to a mercenary brokerage firm in Naples.

The signatory on the transfer was Gregory Vance.

“Gregory?” I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. “How could he possibly afford two million euros? He’s an assistant DA on a government salary!”

“Your ex-husband wasn’t just a corrupt prosecutor, Clara,” Matteo explained, his voice chillingly cold. “He was laundering kickbacks for Corrado’s American distribution networks in the Midwest. When you fled Ohio, you took a USB drive from his study along with your passport.”

I blinked, reaching into my canvas shoulder bag. “The drive? I thought it just had our joint mortgage papers and tax returns!”

“That drive contains the complete ledger of Corrado’s laundering operations through four state judicial districts,” Matteo said. “Gregory didn't want you back because he missed his wife. He wanted you dead because your survival exposes an international RICO conspiracy.”

The horror settled over me like a suffocating blanket. My entire life—my failed marriage, the abuse, the sudden escape—had been entangled in the gears of an underworld war I knew nothing about.

Matteo walked up to me, taking the USB drive from my shaking fingers.

“Now, Clara,” Matteo said softly, his thumb curling around the drive, “we stop running. We go on the offensive.”
