Chapter 3 - The Offer on the Tarmac

When flight AZ611 touched down at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome, the morning sun was just cutting through the coastal fog.
Maya was perched happily on my hip, clutching a miniature stuffed airplane the flight attendant had given her, while little Leo slept peacefully in the crook of my other arm, completely milk-drunk and exhausted.
As we stepped into the private terminal tunnel, we were bypassed straight around the standard customs lines into an exclusive VIP lounge. Waiting on the tarmac below were three armored black Maserati sedans flanked by four men in dark suits.
Matteo took Leo gently from my arms. The tenderness with which the formidable man cradled his son looked unnatural against his dangerous exterior, yet entirely genuine.
“My driver will take you to your destination,” Matteo said, adjusting Leo’s cashmere blanket. “Where in Rome are you staying?”
“Via del Pigneto,” I answered, shifting Maya’s weight. “My cousin Sofia lives there.”
Matteo didn't speak for several seconds. Lorenzo, the bodyguard, leaned in and whispered something into his ear in rapid Sicilian dialect. Matteo’s jaw tightened.
“Pigneto is an active territory for low-level syndicates,” Matteo stated plainly. “Your cousin lives on the fifth floor of a walk-up with no security gate and an eviction notice pending on the ground-floor bakery. You have two hundred and seventy euros in your purse, Clara. You left Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday night after an emergency clinic visit.”
Fear spiked through my chest like ice water. I stepped back, pulling Maya tighter against me. “You had your men look into me?”
“I don't let strangers touch my blood without knowing who they are,” Matteo replied smoothly. “Your ex-husband is named Gregory. He is an associate district attorney with political aspirations, a violent temper, and an open domestic incident report that his friends in the police department buried forty-eight hours ago.”
My knees went weak. The terror of Gregory finding us, of him crossing the Atlantic to drag Maya back, was a living nightmare that never left my throat.
Matteo took a step closer, his presence shielding us from the cold airport draft.
“I have a proposal for you, Clara,” he said, his steel-gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute clarity. “My estate in Tuscany requires a resident pediatric nurse. Leo needs the only milk his body has accepted in three months. In exchange, you and Maya will have diplomatic-grade security, private quarters, medical care, and ten thousand euros a month transferred into an offshore trust in your name.”
“I’m not for sale, Mr. Matteo,” I said, my voice shaking with defensive pride.
“I am not offering to buy you,” he answered, his tone dropping into a solemn, dangerous gravity. “I am offering an alliance. In my world, an unpaid debt is a mortal sin. You kept my son alive at 35,000 feet. Accept my protection, and I promise you on the grave of my wife: your ex-husband will never cast a shadow over your daughter again.”
I looked down at Maya’s innocent face, then at little Leo, who stirred softly in his father's arms.
“I have two conditions,” I said.
Matteo nodded. “Name them.”

“First, I retain full legal autonomy over my daughter. Second, I am an employee, not a prisoner. If I decide to leave, the gates open.”
Matteo extended a broad, scarred hand. “Agreed.”
