Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Olive Groves

Lorenzo’s voice crackled through the encrypted radio on Matteo’s belt.
“Don Matteo. Perimeter breach at the northern vineyard gate. Two black surveillance vans. They cut the primary fiber-optic feeds.”
Matteo was on his feet in a microsecond, the exhausted father instantly replaced by the ruthless Capo of the Valenza syndicate. He pulled a compact 9mm sidearm from his waistband and checked the chamber.
“Gregory?” I gasped, ice flooding my veins.
“No,” Matteo said, pulling me toward the reinforced internal panic vault disguised behind the nursery’s mahogany bookshelf. “Gregory is an insect. He doesn't have the resources to breach a Tier-1 compound. This is Don Corrado—the head of the Calabrian syndicate trying to seize the Mediterranean trade lines.”
He shoved the bookcase aside, entering a 10-digit code into a concealed keypad. A steel blast door swung open with a hydraulic hiss.
“Take Maya and Leo inside,” Matteo ordered, handing me a backup radio and an encrypted phone. “The air system is independent. The walls are six-inch reinforced ballistic plate. You do not open this door for anyone except me or Lorenzo.”
“Matteo, wait—”
He stopped, turning to look at me in the dim red emergency light. For a fraction of a second, the iron mask slipped, revealing a desperate, burning intensity.
He reached out, his thumb lightly grazing my jawline. “Keep my son safe, Clara. And I will make sure there is a world for your daughter to grow up in.”
The heavy steel door sealed shut with a resonant thud.
Inside the vault, Maya woke up from the vibration, rubbing her eyes. “Mommy? Where’s Mr. Matteo?”
“He’s taking care of something outside, sweetie,” I said, pulling her onto the leather sofa beside the travel crib where Leo lay blinking at the ceiling.
For twenty agonizing minutes, the muffled thuds of automatic gunfire and explosive charges echoed through the thick concrete walls. I sat between the two children, my arms wrapped tight around Maya while my foot rocked Leo’s crib, praying to whatever god was listening.

Then, the radio in my hand hissed to life.
“Clara.” Matteo’s voice was ragged, breathing heavily over the static. “The breach is neutralized. Come out.”
