Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING

Back in the city, Cora and Voss reviewed the evidence with an independent forensic investigator.
The flash drive contained hospital records.
Medication logs.
Security footage.
And an audio recording from Evelyn's personal notes.
The footage showed a man entering Daniel's room shortly before his condition deteriorated.
His face was partially hidden.
But his posture was familiar.
Broad shoulders.
Broken nose.
Charcoal suit.
Cora stared.
"Rourke."
Voss sat motionless.
The investigator replayed the footage.
Rourke entered.
Stayed four minutes.
Then left.
Voss's hands tightened on the chair.
"Play it again."
The investigator did.
Cora looked at him.
"Are you okay?"
Voss laughed bitterly.
"No."
Then he stood.
"I want everything preserved."
The investigator nodded.
Voss turned toward Cora.
"Your brother saved my life."
His voice cracked.
"And the man I trusted may have helped kill him."
Cora felt tears rise.
Voss continued.
"I don't know how to make that right."
She looked at him.
"Then don't try to make it right with revenge."
May you like
He stared toward her voice.
"Make it right with the truth."
