Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO VANISHED

Evelyn Shaw lived in a small house outside Albany.
She was fifty-two.
Gray-haired.
Careful.
She opened the door only after Cora identified herself.
When she heard Daniel Hayes's name, her expression changed.
"Come inside."
Voss waited in the car with a trusted driver.
Cora sat across from Evelyn at the kitchen table.
The doctor poured tea.
Her hands trembled.
"Your brother was conscious when he arrived," Evelyn said.
Cora felt her chest tighten.
"He spoke?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Evelyn looked down.
"He said the explosion wasn't an accident."
Cora closed her eyes.
Evelyn continued.
"He said someone wanted Voss dead."
Cora opened her eyes.
"Who?"
Evelyn hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Adrian Mercer."
Cora felt cold.
"But Daniel wasn't dying when he arrived," Evelyn said.
Cora stared.
"What?"
"He had serious injuries. But we expected him to survive."
Cora's heart pounded.
"Then what happened?"
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Someone changed his medication orders."
Cora stopped breathing.
"Who?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"I never found out."
She reached into a drawer.
Then placed a small flash drive on the table.
"I kept copies."
Cora stared.
"Why?"
May you like
Evelyn's voice broke.
"Because I knew one day someone would come asking."
