Chapter 12 - THE LETTER DANIEL LEFT

Evelyn Shaw contacted Cora after the trial.
She had found another item in her old records.
A letter.
Written by Daniel.
Never mailed.
Cora opened it in Voss's office.
Cora,
If you're reading this, something probably went wrong.
She began crying.
Daniel wrote about how proud he was of her.
How he'd watched her work two jobs while finishing school.
How he wished she'd stop believing she had to carry everything alone.
Then came the final paragraph.
Don't spend your life trying to make people sorry for what they did to me. Spend it doing something that makes you happy.
Cora pressed the letter against her chest.
Voss sat quietly.
After a long time, she whispered:
"He knew."
Voss turned toward her.
"What?"
"He knew I would spend years trying to understand."
She wiped her eyes.
"And he wanted me to live."
May you like
Voss nodded.
"Then maybe we should listen to him."
