Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Retribution

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the Fairfax County Circuit Court was packed to maximum capacity for the final sentencing hearing.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Arthur, Emily, and little Noah. Noah wore a handsome little navy blazer and khaki trousers, sitting happily on his grandfather's lap, clutching a toy sailboat.

Diane Vance and Ryan Vance sat at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet secured in heavy steel transport chains. Their former vanity and arrogance had been utterly crushed by six months in solitary detention; their hair was disheveled, their faces hollow and grey.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

"Diane Vance, Ryan Vance," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous act of domestic terror against a defenseless four-year-old child, using chains and starvation to execute an extortion racket."

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

"Diane Vance is hereby sentenced to twenty years at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women without the possibility of early parole."

Diane collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hysterical wail as marshals secured her chains.

"Ryan Vance is sentenced to twelve years at the Sussex State Prison, followed by full financial forfeiture of all assets and permanent lifetime protective restraining orders."

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

"All seized properties and restitution totaling $1.4 million are awarded 100% to the Noah Sterling Irrevocable Living Trust."

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, Noah looked up at his mother with bright, beautiful eyes.

"Mommy?"

Emily leaned down, kissing her son’s soft cheek. "Yes, my brave boy?"

"Are we going to get ice cream with Grandpa now?"

Emily smiled through tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. "Yes, Noah. All the ice cream in the world."
