Chapter 1 - The Silver Chain by the Bowl

Emily walked into the kitchen and saw Diane pulling Noah’s hair while his father stood there and watched.

She stepped inside… and froze.

Noah, her 4-year-old son, was sitting on the tile floor beside the dog bowl. A thick silver chain was wrapped loosely around his little body and attached to a metal pipe near the laundry corner.

His grandmother, Diane, was gripping his hair and forcing his crying face down toward the bowl.

And Ryan — Emily’s husband — stood right beside them, watching in silence.

Noah looked up at his mother with red, tear-filled eyes and trembling lips.

“Mommy… help me…”

Emily’s handbag dropped to the floor.

She rushed forward, shoved Diane hard into the kitchen cabinet, then turned and slapped Ryan across the face for standing there while their son was treated like an animal.

SLAP.

The crack of her palm against Ryan's cheek echoed off the granite walls like a gunshot.

Emily dropped to her knees, removed the cold silver chain from Noah, kicked the dog bowl violently across the floorboards, and pulled her son tightly into her arms.

Noah buried his face into her neck, his entire body convulsing with agonizing sobs. "Mommy... Grandma said I was bad... she said I didn't deserve a plate..."

"You are good, Noah. You are my sweet, perfect boy," Emily wept, kissing his tear-stained forehead while shielding him with her body.

Then Emily looked up at the kitchen counter.

A phone was propped against the ceramic coffee jar.

The screen was unlocked.

A video was still playing on loop.

And the first few seconds of that recording made Diane’s face go pale… while Ryan could no longer say a single word.
