Chapter 9 - The Reward for Kindness

On Friday morning, a very different kind of meeting took place on the top floor of Carter Global Headquarters.

Sitting on the plush leather sofa in my private executive office was twenty-two-year-old Liam Bennett—the young catering server who had stepped forward with a clean linen napkin while Vanessa sprayed me with the hose.

Liam sat nervously, holding a cup of hot coffee, wearing his only clean dress shirt.

The door opened, and I walked in, dressed in an elegant navy-blue silk blouse and tailored trousers, my silver hair neatly styled.

Liam stood up immediately, his eyes widening in awe. “Mrs. Carter… ma'am. Thank you for seeing me.”

I walked over, took his hand with genuine warmth, and gestured for him to sit back down. “Please, Liam, make yourself comfortable.”

Ethan walked in, placing a leather-bound folder on the coffee table.

“Liam,” I said gently. “When I was kneeling in the mud, thirty wealthy individuals who call themselves pillars of society watched and laughed. You were the only person on that lawn who saw a fellow human being in need of help.”

Liam looked down, blushing. “My grandmother raised me to believe that how you treat someone who can do nothing for you is the true measure of your character, ma'am. I just couldn't watch them hurt you.”

Ethan smiled, opening the folder. “My mother’s background team did a routine check on you, Liam. We know you are a third-year engineering student at Vanderbilt University, working three catering jobs to pay your tuition while supporting your younger sister.”

“Yes, sir,” Liam nodded.

“Effective today,” I announced, “the Carter Heritage Foundation has paid your Vanderbilt tuition in full through graduation. Furthermore, upon your graduation, there is an open position for a Junior Project Engineer waiting for you at Carter Global Logistics, with a full signing bonus and housing stipend.”

Liam stared at the paperwork, tears welling in his eyes. His chin quivered as the crushing weight of student debt and exhaustion evaporated in a single moment.

“Mrs. Carter… Ethan… I don't know what to say,” Liam choked out, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. “Thank you… thank you so much.”

“You don't need to say anything, Liam,” I smiled, patting his shoulder. “You earned every bit of this with your own heart.”
