Chapter 7 - The Auditing of Mitchell Capital

While Vanessa wept in the lobby, our forensic accounting division was dismantling the financial empire George Mitchell had spent twenty years manufacturing.

Special Investigator Marcus Lawson presented his certified audit to Ethan and me in the 30th-floor conference room.

“It’s far worse than simple corporate insolvency,” Lawson explained, displaying multi-tiered financial schematics on the interactive screens. “Over the past thirty-six months, George Mitchell siphoned $14.2 million from his employees’ private pension fund to cover margin calls on high-stakes foreign currency bets.”

Ethan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “He stole from his own warehouse workers and truck drivers?”

“Exactly,” Lawson nodded. “His plan was to use Ethan’s personal trust fund—which was slated to release $50 million upon marriage—to quietly refill the pension accounts before the Department of Labor launched an audit next quarter.”

I sat back in my leather chair, a cold chill passing through my chest. “So the wedding wasn't just a social merger. It was a calculated robbery designed to keep George Mitchell out of federal prison.”

“And Vanessa knew about it,” Lawson added, pulling up a decrypted text thread between Vanessa and her father from three weeks ago.

Vanessa: ‘Make sure Ethan signs the joint bank mandate before we fly to Italy for the honeymoon. I need $3 million cleared for the villa renovations.’

George: ‘Secure the ring first, darling. Once you’re legally a Carter, his mother will have no choice but to cover our shortfalls to protect their family name.’

Ethan stared at the glowing screen, his hands clenching into tight fists. “They thought my mother would pay ransom to protect our reputation.”

“They forgot,” I smiled softly, “that a Carter never pays for deceit.”
