Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Eviction

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the sensational story had exploded across every major financial newspaper and society tabloid in the American South:
‘Billionaire Matriarch Eleanor Carter Sprayed with Hose at Son’s Engagement Party; Mitchell Dynasty Sinks into Instant Bankruptcy.’
Inside the executive boardroom of Carter Global Headquarters on West End Avenue, the mood was clinical and ruthless.
Ethan sat at the long mahogany table beside me, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit. Gone was the naive young romantic of yesterday; in his eyes was the hard, focused resolve of a man who had narrowly escaped a lifelong trap.
Across from us sat George Mitchell and his bankruptcy attorneys, looking disheveled, defeated, and exhausted after a night of frantic phone calls.
“Mrs. Carter… Ethan,” George’s lead attorney began nervously, clearing his throat. “We are prepared to offer a complete public apology, signed by Vanessa and Patricia, along with a full retraction of all social statements. In exchange, we request a five-year debt restructuring on the Belle Meade estate and our logistics subsidiary.”
I didn't even look at the proposal. I slid it into the wastebasket beside my chair.
“Your daughter doused me in freezing water and laughed while her friends filmed it, George,” I said quietly. “Your wife demanded my bag be searched for stolen silver. You thought my son was a golden ticket to clear your gambling debts and bad commercial speculations in Florida.”
George buried his face in his hands, groaning in despair. “I am ruined… the banks have already frozen our corporate checking accounts. If you don't roll over the debt, our suppliers will halt shipments by noon.”
“Then you had better start packing boxes, George,” Ethan spoke up, his voice firm and decisive. “Because Carter Global does not negotiate with people who lack basic human decency. Every contract between our firms is terminated with cause.”

Julian Hayes opened the boardroom doors, gesturing to two building security officers.
“Meeting adjourned, gentlemen. Security will escort you to the lobby.”
