Chapter 7 - The Sister’s Hollow Alibi

Two weeks later, inside the interrogation facility at the County Detention Center, Vanessa attempted to plead for a reduced sentence.
Sitting across from Prosecutor Karen Vance, Vanessa looked hollow, her designer clothes replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed.
“It was postpartum stress!” Vanessa sobbed, pressing her cuffed hands against the metal table. “I was overwhelmed! Rachel was always flaunting Emma’s milestones! Mom kept telling me that Rachel thought she was better than me because she had a college degree! Mom handed me the skillet! Mom told me to do it!”
Prosecutor Karen Vance slid the 4K video transcript across the table.
“The video proves that you held that skillet for fifteen seconds before taking two deliberate steps forward and throwing it with full kinetic force,” Prosecutor Vance said coldly. “The grand jury has rejected all claims of diminished capacity.”

“Furthermore,” Prosecutor Vance added, “the County Child Protection Division has permanently terminated your custody of Lily, placing her under the safe guardianship of her biological father in North Carolina.”
Vanessa let out a blood-curdling scream, collapsing onto the concrete floor of the interrogation room, realizing that her jealousy and cruelty had cost her her child, her freedom, and her entire life.
