Chapter 4 - The Trauma Ward Lockout

At 10:15 a.m., the pediatric intensive care unit’s heavy magnetic doors clicked open.
Dr. Aaron Blake, the chief pediatric trauma surgeon, walked out with a clipboard.
“Rachel?”
I jumped to my feet, my heart pounding against my ribs. “Doctor... how is she?”
Dr. Blake placed a reassuring hand on my arm. “Emma has suffered a non-displaced fracture of the right zygomatic arch and a grade-two concussion. The burns on her cheek and temple are second-degree superficial thermal injuries from the hot butter. Fortunately, the skillet struck at an angle, sparing her eye and facial nerve from permanent laceration.”
I let out a ragged, trembling breath, collapsing back onto the plastic chair as tears of overwhelming relief washed over me.
“She is awake, Rachel,” Dr. Blake smiled softly. “She asked for her stuffed giraffe and her mommy.”
Before I could take a step toward the ICU door, the elevator lobby outside the ward erupted into frantic shouting.
Helen Miller, Arthur Vance, and Vanessa burst through the security barrier, flanked by a high-priced private attorney in a grey suit.
“Rachel!” Helen screamed, pushing past a nurse. “You tell these officers to leave our house! They are threatening to arrest your sister in front of Lily! Tell them it was an accident!”
Vanessa looked disheveled, her expensive blouse wrinkled, her face red with hysterical anger. “Rachel, you ungrateful bitch! I am raising a child alone! You can’t put me in jail because your clumsy daughter bumped into a cooking pan!”
Officer Miller and three hospital security guards moved with lightning speed, forming an impenetrable wall between my family and the ICU corridor.
“Step back!” Officer Miller commanded, his hand resting on his taser. “This is a restricted pediatric intensive care wing!”
I stepped around Officer Miller, looking directly into my mother’s cold eyes and my sister’s venomous face.

“Emma didn't bump into a pan, Vanessa,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and razor-sharp. “You threw eight pounds of cast iron into a four-year-old child’s face. And it is all on 4K video with crystal-clear audio.”
Vanessa stopped breathing. Her arrogant expression shattered into pure, naked terror.
