Chapter 6 - The Arrest at the Breakfast Table

Two detectives from the County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit stepped through the crowd, holding stamped felony arrest warrants.

Senior Detective Marcus Stone stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Vanessa Miller,” Detective Stone announced loudly. “You are under arrest for Aggravated Child Abuse with a Deadly Weapon, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and Fiduciary Embezzlement.”

Vanessa shrieked, kicking and flailing as two female deputies pinned her arms behind her back, clicking the cold iron cuffs around her manicured wrists.

“Mom! Dad! Don't let them take me!” Vanessa wailed, her mascara running in dark streaks down her face. “Lily needs me! Rachel, please! We’re sisters! We share the same blood!”

“You gave up the right to call me sister the moment you threw hot iron at my baby,” I answered without a shred of pity.

Detective Stone turned his piercing gaze onto my parents.

“Helen Miller, Arthur Vance,” Detective Stone continued. “You are both charged under State Penal Code Section 273a as accessories to felony child endangerment, tampering with a crime scene, and grand corporate fraud under the Trust Protections Act.”

Helen burst into bitter, dry sobs as handcuffs were placed around her wrists. “Rachel! How could you do this to your own mother?! I raised you!”

“You raised me to believe I was nothing,” I replied coldly. “Today, I am Emma’s mother. And I will protect her from you for the rest of my life.”

The hospital corridor watched in stunned silence as my entire family was hauled into the elevator in heavy chains, their screams echoing off the elevator shaft as the doors slid shut.
