Chapter 4 - The Secret Tunnel Beneath the Parquet

While Marcus mobilized fifty heavily armed operatives across the five boroughs, Elena and I monitored the live security feeds from the master suite via my encrypted tablet.
On the screen, Jason was growing visibly agitated. He paced across my Persian rug, checking his gold Rolex—a watch I had given him for his twenty-fifth birthday.
“Where is he?!” Jason snarled, kicking my nightstand.
Tom, my compromised security lieutenant, spoke through the radio: “Jason, his vehicle just pinged near the Midtown tunnel! He’s heading toward the Hudson docks!”
Jason grinned, a repulsive look of sadistic triumph spreading across his face. “He’s running to Warehouse 9! Move the strike team to the harbor! We trap him between the containers and bury him in the river!”
On the video monitor, Jason and his two hitmen hurried out of the master bedroom, leaving the front doors unlocked behind them as they sprinted toward their black SUVs.
“He took the bait,” Elena said, loading a fresh magazine into her secondary firearm.
“He was always impatient,” I replied, shifting the Mercedes into drive. “Raymond used to tell me that Jason wanted the crown before he even knew how to wear the armor.”
We rolled out of the garage, cutting through the secluded tree line behind the estate. The rain was coming down in torrents now, lashing against the bulletproof glass, washing away the blood of a peaceful life I thought I had built.
“Victor,” Elena asked, glancing at me from the passenger seat. “What happens when the Falcone family realizes Jason failed?”
“Don Falcone is an old snake,” I answered coldly. “He only strikes when he thinks his opponent is already dead. When he sees me standing at the harbor tonight, he will offer Jason’s head on a silver platter to save his own empire.”
We sped south along the West Side Highway, sirens silent, moving under the cover of the midnight storm.

The hunt was underway. But the wolves didn't know they were running straight into the hunter’s crosshairs.
