Chapter 7 - THE DETECTIVE WHO REFUSED TO LOOK AWAY

Harper knew the investigation had become dangerous.

She also knew she couldn't continue as though nothing had changed.

She disclosed the threats, the repeated contacts with Lucian, and the possible conflict of interest to an independent investigator assigned to review the case.

She requested reassignment from matters directly involving Ferraro.

It was the right decision.

And it hurt more than she expected.

Lucian called that evening.

She answered.

“Detective Lane.”

His voice was warm.

“Still refusing dinner?”

She smiled faintly.

“Still asking?”

“Every chance I get.”

Harper looked toward the window.

“Lucian, I need to tell you something.”

His tone changed.

“What?”

“I've stepped away from the investigation involving you.”

Silence.

Then he asked, “Why?”

“Because I can't investigate someone while becoming personally involved with him.”

Lucian was quiet.

Harper continued.

“And because I need to know whether you're telling me the truth.”

He exhaled.

“Fair.”

She looked down.

“I don't know what happens next.”

Lucian's voice softened.

“Neither do I.”

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he said, “Harper?”

“Yes?”

“I'm not asking you to compromise your badge.”

She closed her eyes.

“Good.”

“I'm asking whether, someday, when all this is over, you might let me buy you coffee.”

She smiled.

“Someday.”

May you like

Lucian laughed softly.

“I'll take it.”
