Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT LUCIAN SAVED A STRANGER

The attack happened outside a grocery store.
Harper was off duty, carrying two bags toward her car, when she heard shouting.
A young woman stood near the entrance.
A man had grabbed her wrist.
She was trying to pull away.
Harper set down her groceries.
“Police. Let her go.”
The man turned.
His expression changed.
Then he released the woman and ran.
Harper pursued him toward the parking garage.
She was halfway down the ramp when a second man stepped from behind a concrete pillar.
She stopped.
He raised a metal pipe.
Harper moved backward.
Then heard tires screech.
A black sedan stopped at the entrance.
Lucian Ferraro emerged.
“Harper!”
The man with the pipe hesitated.
Lucian moved toward him.
Harper drew her weapon and ordered the attacker to drop the pipe.
He did.
The second man fled.
Officers arrived minutes later.
Harper gave her statement.
The young woman from the grocery store was safe.
Lucian stood nearby.
His face was pale.
Harper approached him.
“What were you doing here?”
He looked at her.
“Buying groceries.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“In a suit?”
He glanced at his clothes.
“I have expensive taste in vegetables.”
Despite herself, Harper laughed.
Then her expression softened.
“You helped.”
Lucian shrugged.
“You had the situation under control.”
“Not entirely.”
He looked at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he said, “You scared me.”
Harper stared.
“Lucian Ferraro gets scared?”
May you like
His smile faded.
“More often than people think.”
