Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT GRAY HAVEN BURNED

The fire started at the waterfront warehouse just after midnight.

Harper was home when her phone rang.

Owen's voice was urgent.

“Harper, there's a fire at Pier Nine.”

She sat up.

“What happened?”

“Unknown. Fire department's responding.”

Harper looked toward the window.

A faint orange glow lit the horizon.

Pier Nine belonged to a company connected to Lucian.

She called him.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Her stomach tightened.

She drove toward the waterfront but remained outside the emergency perimeter.

Firefighters battled flames that climbed through the old warehouse.

Police blocked the street.

Harper searched the crowd.

Then she saw Lucian.

He stood beside an ambulance.

Blood marked his forehead.

His coat was torn.

Harper ran toward him.

“Lucian!”

He turned.

For a moment, he looked stunned.

Then relieved.

“Harper.”

She stopped in front of him.

“Are you hurt?”

“Nothing serious.”

She stared.

“You're bleeding.”

He smiled faintly.

“Apparently.”

She looked toward the burning warehouse.

“What happened?”

His expression darkened.

“Someone tried to destroy the records.”

Harper swallowed.

“Did they?”

Lucian shook his head.

“Not all of them.”

May you like

He looked at her.

“And I think we finally know who's responsible.”
