Chapter 15 - THE PROMISE BENEATH THE ROSES

Two years after the arrest outside Rosabelle's, Harper stood in the flower shop wearing a simple ivory dress.
Rose Bellini adjusted the ribbon around her bouquet.
“You look beautiful.”
Harper smiled.
“Thank you.”
Rose stepped back.
Then wiped her eyes.
Harper laughed softly.
“Rose.”
“What?”
“Are you crying?”
“Of course I'm crying.”
Harper smiled.
“Why?”
Rose looked at her.
“Because I remember the day you arrested that stubborn man outside my shop.”
Harper laughed.
“So do I.”
Rose shook her head.
“I thought he'd never stop talking.”
Harper smiled.
“He hasn't.”
They laughed together.
Then Rose took Harper's hands.
“Sweetheart, I'm glad you made him earn your trust.”
Harper nodded.
“So am I.”
---
The wedding took place in a small garden overlooking the Gray Haven waterfront.
There were no armed guards.
No extravagant displays.
No powerful men demanding attention.
Just family.
Friends.
And a few people who had helped bring the truth into the light.
Owen stood beside Lucian.
Noah walked Harper down the aisle.
Rose sat in the front row.
Lucian wore a dark suit.
His hair was neatly combed.
And his expression was almost comically nervous.
When Harper reached him, she smiled.
“Mr. Ferraro.”
He laughed softly.
“Detective Lane.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Still nervous?”
He nodded.
“Terrified.”
“Good.”
The guests laughed.
Then the officiant began.
Lucian spoke first.
“Harper, the first time we met, you put handcuffs on me.”
The guests laughed.
Harper smiled.
“You deserved them.”
Lucian nodded.
“I did.”
His expression softened.
“I spent years believing that being feared meant being respected.”
He took a breath.
“But you taught me that respect has to be earned.”
Harper's eyes filled.
“You didn't excuse my mistakes.”
He smiled.
“You made me face them.”
His voice trembled.
“And somehow, after everything, you still gave me a chance to become someone better.”
He squeezed her hands.
“I promise to keep earning that chance.”
Harper swallowed.
Then spoke.
“Lucian, when I first met you, I thought you were arrogant.”
The guests laughed.
Lucian smiled.
“I was.”
She continued.
“Dangerous.”
He nodded.
“That too.”
“And completely incapable of taking anything seriously.”
Lucian laughed.
“Mostly true.”
Harper smiled through tears.
“But beneath all that charm, I found a man who was willing to change.”
Her voice softened.
“Not because I demanded it.”
“But because he finally understood why it mattered.”
She squeezed his hands.
“I promise to love you honestly.”
“To challenge you when you're wrong.”
Lucian smiled.
“And to stand beside you when life becomes difficult.”
Her eyes filled.
“Because love isn't about pretending someone is perfect.”
She smiled.
“It's about choosing someone who keeps trying to do better.”
They exchanged rings.
Then the officiant pronounced them husband and wife.
Lucian kissed Harper.
And the garden erupted in applause.
---
Later that evening, they stood beside the waterfront.
The sun was setting.
The water glowed gold.
Lucian wrapped his arms around Harper.
“Happy?”
She smiled.
“Very.”
He kissed her forehead.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Lucian looked down.
“Harper?”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She laughed.
“You already married me.”
He smiled.
“I know.”
“Then what?”
He leaned closer.
“Can we have a date tomorrow?”
Harper burst into laughter.
“You're impossible.”
Lucian grinned.
“Is that a yes?”
She pretended to consider.
Then smiled.
“Yes.”
He kissed her.
And for the first time, Lucian Ferraro wasn't asking for something he could purchase, negotiate, or take.
He was asking for something freely given.
Time.
Trust.
Love.
Harper looked toward Rosabelle's in the distance.
She remembered the rain.
The scattered flowers.
The handcuffs.
The elderly woman lying on the pavement.
And the man who had smiled at her while asking for a date.
At the time, she'd believed the arrest was the beginning of another difficult investigation.
She hadn't known it would uncover years of corruption.
Or change the lives of so many people.
And she certainly hadn't known it would lead her here.
To a quiet evening.
A wedding ring.
And a man who had finally learned that love could never be forced.
Lucian kissed her forehead.
“Mrs. Ferraro.”
Harper smiled.
“Mr. Ferraro.”
He laughed.
Then took her hand.
Together, they walked toward the garden lights.
And Gray Haven, the city that had once known Lucian Ferraro only as a dangerous man, now knew something else.
He was a man who had made mistakes.
Faced consequences.
And chosen to build a different life.
May you like
Not because love had erased his past.
But because he had finally stopped running from it.
