Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois was packed to capacity for the sentencing of Julian Vance and Selina Vance.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery was myself, accompanied by Julian Hayes and Detective Marcus Stone.
Julian and Selina sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron transport chains. Their former vanity and arrogance had been utterly crushed by months in solitary holding.
Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.
"Julian Vance, Selina Vance," Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous conspiracy of corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and domestic fraud, motivated by pure greed and shameless cruelty."
Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.
"Julian Vance is hereby sentenced to twelve years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Pekin, without the possibility of early parole."
Julian collapsed forward onto the table, letting out a broken, hopeless wail.
"Selina Vance is sentenced to seven years at the Federal Prison Camp, Greenville, followed by full financial restitution of $2,450,000 to the Clara Sterling Living Trust."
Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.
"The marriage of Clara Vance and Julian Vance is declared permanently dissolved ab initio, with sole, exclusive, unchallengeable legal and physical custody of the minor children awarded to the mother."

As the federal marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, I took a deep, pure breath of absolute freedom.
Justice was complete, unshakeable, and eternal.
