Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in Aspen

While Julian sat shivering on the curb waiting for a taxi he couldn't afford, my children—three-year-old Leo and ten-month-old Maya—were resting safely in the sunlit penthouse of my private estate in Aspen, under the loving care of my mother and certified pediatric nurses.
I flew out on the corporate Gulfstream at 6:00 PM.
When I walked into the nursery, little Leo ran across the plush carpet, throwing his arms around my legs.
"Mommy! Look! Grandma helped me build a tall tower!" Leo beamed.
I sank to my knees on the floor, scooping my son into my arms, burying my face into his hair, tears of profound, unadulterated relief washing over my cheeks.
For two years, I had allowed myself to be degraded, insulted, and starved of self-respect because I thought enduring the abuse was the only way to preserve my children's stability.
In reality, staying with a monster had been the greatest danger of all.
My mother walked over, gently rubbing my shoulder. "You saved them, Clara. You gave them a mother who knows her own worth."

I held my baby girl Maya against my chest, feeling her steady, warm heartbeat against my ribs.
"No one will ever teach my children that cruelty is normal," I whispered, kissing her soft cheek. "From this night on, we live in the light."
