Chapter 2 - The Projector by the Pool

Julian reached the edge of the stage, breathless, his hands frantically reaching to tear the microphone cord from the socket.

"Clara, put that down!" Julian hissed under his breath, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "You're embarrassing yourself! If you're throwing a hysterical fit because of a harmless joke, go cry inside!"

I didn't step back. I looked at the DJ, who was an undercover private intelligence contractor from Vance Forensic Investigations.

I gave a single nod.

CLICK.

The twenty-foot high-definition outdoor LED screen above the cabana flickered to life.

The guests gasped.

Displayed in crystal-clear 4K resolution was not a montage of family memories.

It was an unedited surveillance video from the presidential suite of the St. Regis Aspen, timestamped three weeks prior.

The footage showed Julian Vance and his sister-in-law, Selina, wrapped in hotel bathrobes, clinking crystal champagne flutes before sharing a passionate, unmistakable kiss on the balcony.

The audio played with concussive clarity through the six-speaker surround system:

Julian: "Don't worry about Bradley, baby. And Clara is too busy working eighty-hour weeks at her desk to ever notice. Once I siphon the final two million from her investment reserves, you and I will disappear to Saint-Tropez."

Selina: "Make sure she pays for your birthday party first, darling. I want the finest catering in Chicago on her card."

The poolside patio plunged into a sub-zero freeze.

Drinks slipped from numb fingers. Executive colleagues stared at the screen with open-mouthed revulsion.

Selina shrieked, dropping her cocktail glass onto the flagstones, clutching her face in hysterical terror.

Julian stood frozen on the stage stairs, his face turning an ashen shade of curdled milk.
